Digital Journalist Full Description

Overview: 
The Digital Journalist (Multimedia Associate) works across multiple teams within University Marketing and Communications (UMAC) to create photos and videos for news stories, social media, and other marketing needs. This is a one-year position, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding. The Digital Journalist will interview faculty, students, and staff on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, research, internships, and campus events. This position creates and edits content for web and social media, occasionally writing event recaps for Utah State Magazine and appearing on camera for social media content. The role also assists with larger photo and video shoots across campus when necessary.
 
The Digital Journalist is inquisitive by nature and has the knowledge and skills to schedule and conduct interviews on a wide range of university topics, often balancing multiple projects at a time to create a variety of multimedia content for UMAC and its entities. Responsibilities: 
Main Functions:
  • Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, asking appropriate questions to create compelling content.
  • Works independently to produce content for Utah State Today, Utah State Magazine, the university’s YouTube channel, and social media.
  • Ensures video aligns with Utah State University’s branding position.
  • Meets deadlines for all projects.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Preferred Functions:
  • Understands story strategy in relation to the university’s mission and vision.
  • Stays up to date on social media trends and suggests appropriate content strategies accordingly.
  • Conceptualizes and executes digital interviews and video shoots across campus, in studios, or on location.
  • Assists in coverage for special events and promotional activities, serves as photographer and/or videographer to capture notable moments from campus events.
 Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, communications or related field OR an equivalent of combined education and experience.
  • Understanding of basic journalism principles with experience using editing software is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least one year of relevant experience writing stories and/or conducting interviews as a student reporter with additional experience using editing software, or a combination of work in a related field or education plus experience.

Incumbents work indoors and outdoors in various locations and conditions and can be exposed to weather, contaminants, and temperature changes. Employees are frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds, retrieve and transport production equipment, and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time. Incumbents nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
