Description  | Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Community Standards provides vision, leadership, and daily administration for the University’s community standards system that serves all undergraduate and graduate students at Hofstra. The Director of Community Standards provides administrative and policy oversight for the University’s community standards process and its hearing boards; leadership development for the department’s educational support services and training initiatives; supervision of the Assistant Director of Community Standards; and maintenance, tracking, and retrieval of all student community standards records. The Director of Community Standards is a member of the Dean of Students’ leadership team and assists with various area projects, committees, and initiatives within the Division of Student Enrollment, Engagement, and Success (SEES) and the University.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supervises and directs all aspects of student community standards, including oversight of the Assistant Director, Student Conduct Administrators, and all student and administrative hearing boards. Develops and updates community standards policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, ADA), in consultation with University stakeholders such as Public Safety, the Title IX Coordinator, and the Office of General Counsel. Maintains current knowledge of relevant laws, regulatory changes, and best practices in student conduct and higher education. Manages all high-level conduct cases including those involving Title IX, Prohibited Bias, and Discriminatory Harassment and oversees all associated sanctioning. Coordinates student conduct processes for student organizations and group activities, including data collection, statistical reporting, and annual revisions to the Code of Student Conduct/Community Standards. Leads departmental strategic planning initiatives and assessments and develops a community standards program that promotes ethical behavior and reflects the University’s P.R.I.D.E. Values. Advises Resident Directors in their roles as Student Conduct Administrators and collaborates with Residence Life on conduct-related policies and procedures. Oversees the Maxient conduct database, ensuring system integrity, data accuracy, and its use for tracking, reporting, and assessment purposes; provides training and support on database usage, procedural updates, and policy interpretation. Reviews and approves responses to documentation and record requests prepared by the Assistant Director, including Dean’s Certifications and conduct verifications for transfer/employment purposes. Coordinates closely with the Dean of Students/Associate Dean on official certifications and record reviews and serves as a resource to ensure consistency across cases and documentation. Works collaboratively with departments within SEES, other University offices, and members of the local community to build a student-centered community standards program aligned with Hofstra’s mission. Consults and coordinates with campus partners to develop and maintain student support services integrated within the conduct process. Designs and delivers educational initiatives, presentations, and training for students, faculty, and staff related to conduct, ethics, and community standards. Provides Bystander Intervention Training during summer New Student Orientation sessions. Creates and implements training programs for individuals serving in the conduct system, including board members, hearing officers, and Resident Assistants. Oversees the creation, publication, and regular review of all community standards-related materials, including the Code of Community Standards, and ensure the accuracy of the community standards website. Leads and coordinates the annual update of the Guide to Pride website (student handbook). Represents the Dean of Students Office at Admissions events and serves as a non-voting member of the Honor Board. Participates in SEES and University committees. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications  | Graduate degree in a relevant field such as law, higher education, student affairs administration, or counseling required. Three to five years of professional experience in student conduct, community standards, residence life, student affairs, or a closely related area. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare formal reports, articulate policies, and engage effectively with students, families, and campus stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, student behavior management, or crisis response. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and external partners. Proficiency with student affairs technologies, including student information systems and conduct management databases.
Preferred Qualifications  | Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct, community standards, or related areas within higher education preferred. Demonstrated experience applying student development theory to student conduct processes, with familiarity in legal and regulatory issues such as FERPA, Title IX, the Clery Act, and the ADA. Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, with a record of incorporating these principles into conduct processes. Experience utilizing educational sanctioning and/or alternative resolution models and working effectively with diverse student populations and departments such as Residence Life, Public Safety, Counseling, and Academic Affairs. Experience designing and delivering conduct-related education and training for students, faculty, and staff. High proficiency in technologies including Maxient, Navigate, and Ellucian Banner. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively, and to manage sensitive situations with discretion, sound judgment, and a student-centered approach. Strong leadership, supervision, conflict resolution, and data analysis skills, including the ability to assess, track, and report behavioral trends to inform prevention and policy efforts.

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education.
