| Primary Function of Organizational Unit | Under the direction of the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Department of Human Resources is responsible for providing a full complement of employment services to the staff and faculty of North Carolina Central University. Services include employment, employee relations, salary administration, benefits administration, records administration, leave administration, position classification and compensation, training and development. The Employee Relations Office is dedicated to upholding policies and principles relative to employment and educational experiences for the campus. The office is also charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the University is trained and compliant regarding applicable Employee Relations policies and procedures. |
| Primary Purpose of Position | The Director of Employee Relations provides strategic leadership and oversight in the areas of employee relations, workplace investigations, policy interpretation, and employment compliance. This position advises university leadership on the application of employment laws, policies, and regulations within both employment and academic environments. Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director of Employee Relations partners with faculty, staff, and university leadership to foster a workplace that is free from discrimination and harassment, ensure equitable treatment of employees, and support a respectful and inclusive campus community. The Director oversees employee relations matters for SHRA employees, faculty, and EHRA non-faculty employees and supervises HR Consultants. |
| Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | The successful candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations, including EEO, ADA, FMLA, and related compliance requirements. They will have the ability to conduct fair, thorough, and objective workplace investigations and possess strong policy interpretation and analytical skills. This role requires the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism and discretion, as well as excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities. The candidate must also have strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver training and facilitate discussions effectively. Additionally, the individual should be able to build collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and university leadership, have experience working with HR systems and workforce data reporting, and demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities while exercising sound judgment in complex employee relations situations. |
