Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Scholastic Press seeks an editorial assistant to join the team. The position provides an opportunity to immerse yourself the world of children's books by supporting two executive editors on robust lists of middle grade and young adult fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels, in addition to managing departmental duties. A passion for children's books is a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Primarily a support role: Must provide clerical and editorial support for managers, including metadata/systems input, preparing materials for meetings, ordering books, and mailing. Daily responsibilities include all-around project support, as well as acting as the point person for inquiries from other departments, including legal, sales, production, design, and marketing.
  • This position will assist with administrative work related to a global franchise, as well as other Scholastic Trade/school market revenue-driving authors and properties.
  • Read and evaluate agent submissions for managers and, once trained, review book passes and proofs for managers. Draft cover copy and fact sheets. May be asked to do second reads on manuscripts or submissions for manager.
  • Must also provide departmental support with scheduling, meeting organization, and coordination of departmental initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • This is an entry-level position, and the role's responsibilities are approximately 80% administrative, 20% editorial/creative. The candidate should be highly organized and have a proven ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Crucial strengths include excellent writing skills, problem solving, great organizational and time management skills, and fluidity of communication in all forms (in person, on the phone, over video, and via email).
  • The ideal candidate has a genuine passion for middle-grade and young adult books and a desire to learn more about the world of children's book publishing. They enjoy reading broadly and often.
  • Candidate should have a keen eye for detail, strong motivation, comfortable asking for help when needed, but be a self-starter able to work independently, manage deadlines, and eager to be an active participant on a collaborative team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and maintain schedules across several projects simultaneously.
  • This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which will include but not be limited to executing mailings and participating in and contributing to in-person meetings. Position will require being in the New York office minimum two days a week. Additional in-office attendance may be required if the essential functions of the role require it.
