| Job Summary | The University of Kentucky’s Research Financial Services team is seeking an experienced supervisor to serve as one of two managers leading the Financial Administration team. Each manager directly supervises approximately five Financial Administrators and is responsible for employee development, performance management, workload coordination, training, and operational leadership. Working within a shared supervisory model, the two managers collaborate closely to provide consistent leadership, guidance, and oversight across the Financial Administration team. They also partner with peer leaders throughout Research Financial Services to address operational challenges, promote consistent practices, maintain appropriate boundaries among functional areas, and support the timely and accurate submission of grant-level invoices and financial reports. This position does not maintain an assigned portfolio of sponsored projects. Instead, the manager provides day-to-day leadership and technical oversight for staff responsible for grant-level invoicing and financial reporting. As a primary resource for direct reports, the manager answers questions, interprets departmental policies and procedures, troubleshoots complex issues, monitors work quality and data integrity, supports month-end draw activities, and escalates matters outside Research Financial Services’ area of responsibility when appropriate. This position is well suited for individuals who enjoy mastering complex business processes, continuously expanding their knowledge, and applying what they learn to develop others and solve challenging operational problems. Successful candidates will develop and maintain expertise in the policies, procedures, business processes, and financial requirements governing the work performed by their teams. They are expected to become trusted resources for staff by providing practical guidance, supporting problem resolution, and promoting the consistent application of departmental expectations. Success in this role requires initiative, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous professional growth. While prior grants management experience is beneficial, candidates with supervisory experience in accounting, finance, compliance, auditing, healthcare administration, higher education, government, banking, or other complex operational environments are encouraged to apply. Candidates without direct grants management experience must demonstrate the ability to apply transferable leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills to a specialized financial environment. The manager develops employees through structured training, ongoing feedback, mentoring, coaching, and career-development discussions. Responsibilities include assessing performance, supporting professional growth, evaluating readiness for advancement opportunities, recognizing achievement, fostering accountability, and addressing performance concerns through coaching and, when necessary, corrective action. Strong supervisory, communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Work Location Expectations This position requires regular onsite presence in Lexington, Kentucky. New hires should expect to work primarily onsite during the first 90 days to support onboarding, training, relationship-building, and development of role-specific expertise. Following successful completion of the onboarding period and demonstrated proficiency in the role, the position becomes eligible for a hybrid work arrangement consistent with university and departmental guidelines. Candidates should reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Lexington or be willing to relocate. This position is not eligible for a fully remote work arrangement. |
