About the Role
The Graduate College at Arizona State University is seeking an experienced Human Resources professional to lead HR operations, strategy, and compliance for a dynamic, innovative academic unit. Reporting to the Director of Student Funding and Business Operations, this position oversees all HR functions for the Graduate College, ensuring consistent and transparent practices that strengthen employee engagement, organizational performance, and student success.
As the Graduate College's HR leader, you will serve as the primary advisor to leadership on workforce planning, employee relations, and organizational development, while also acting as a university-wide resource for graduate assistant and postdoctoral hiring practices. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape inclusive HR strategies that support faculty, staff, graduate assistants, and postdoctoral scholars across one of the nation's most innovative universities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all Graduate College HR functions, ensuring compliance with ASU policies and state/federal regulations.
- Partner with leadership on workforce planning, staffing strategies, career progression, and organizational development.
- Administer full-cycle recruitment and hiring processes, including job classification, salary analysis, job postings, candidate selection, interview participation, and Workday transactions.
- Oversee onboarding activities; design tools and resources to improve new employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
- Coordinate employee development, training, and recognition programs to build a positive, workplace culture.
- Manage payroll processing, reconciliations, redistributions, and time reporting; resolve payroll discrepancies in collaboration with ASU Payroll.
- Maintain Graduate College HR resources, including the Employee Handbook, Graduate Assistant Handbook, and postdoc appointment templates.
- Serve as a Graduate College point of contact for RA/TA/GSA and postdoctoral appointments; oversee appointment letters, Workday approvals, and policy compliance across ASU.
- Provide consultation on performance management, employee relations, grievances, and conflict resolution; prepare documentation and support sensitive personnel actions.
- Act as liaison for leave requests (FMLA, ADA accommodations, ASU Leaves), working closely with the Office of Human Resources.
- Ensure HR compliance through documentation management, internal controls, and responses to internal and external audit requests.
- Develop and deliver training, job aids, and process guides for staff and supervisors.
- Collect, analyze, and report HR data to support evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Represent the Graduate College in ASU-wide initiatives (such as Workday HCM adoption) and at state, regional, and national organizations, boards, and committees.

Desired Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources
- Human resources experience in a higher education environment
- Experience with graduate assistant and postdoc hiring processes a plus
- Skilled in maintaining effective working relationships with a broad group of constituents
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to tactfully enforce compliance with policies and procedures
- Experience delivering exemplary customer service, including exhibiting professionalism and expertise in every interaction

- Knowledge of electronic data processing and applications as they apply to human resources; experience with Workday HCM is a plus

Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to walk or travel moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
