INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

The Instructional Designer is responsible for designing, developing, and continuously improving high-impact learning solutions that support the safety, productivity, leadership, and professional development of employees across field and office roles. This role partners closely with subject matter experts, operations leaders, and safety teams to translate real-world construction practices into engaging, practical, and scalable training experiences.

The ideal candidate understands adult learning principles, has experience designing for hands-on and compliance-driven environments, and can balance structured instructional design with the realities of a fast-paced construction organization.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning & Development, Organizational Development, or comparable experience
  • 3–5 years of instructional design or learning experience (construction, manufacturing, industrial, or safety-driven environments preferred)
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience with L&D related authoring software
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience working with a Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies
  • Experience developing blended learning solutions for both field and office audiences
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills

Preferred:
  • Preferred LMS experience in WorkDay, Arcoro, or a similar program
  • Preferred experience in Articulate, including Storyline 360 and Rise 360
  • Experience working with a general construction contractor/company
  • Applicable certifications in Adult Learning
  • Familiarity with OSHA, safety training, or compliance-driven learning

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Instructional Design and Learning Strategy
  • Lead end-to-end development of online learning experiences (needs analysis through evaluation), ensuring alignment to business goals and learner performance outcomes
  • Partner with SMEs and stakeholders to define learning objectives, success criteria, and measurement plans (knowledge checks, skill demonstrations, and outcomes)
  • Apply adult learning theory and instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAM) to create practical, job-relevant learning experiences
  • Design and develop blended learning solutions including instructor-led training, eLearning, job aids, simulations, and performance support tools
  • Ensure training materials align with company and branding standards, regulatory requirements, and industry terminology and best practices
  • Embrace AI tools responsibly to improve efficiency and quality in tasks such as prototyping, drafting, editing, and content creation

Learning Technology & Systems
  • Develop and manage content within the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Leverage learning technologies and authoring tools (e.g., Articulate, Captivate, Rise)
  • Ensure content is accessible, mobile-friendly, and usable in field environments
  • Build, test, and publish courses in the LMS; manage basic course structure, quizzes, completion rules, and basic reporting
  • Partner with L&D Team Members to assess course issues and address escalations
  • In partnership with L&D Team, manage and update LMS records to maintain accuracy and timeliness

Learning Delivery and Support
  • Support facilitators and trainers with materials, facilitation guides, and learner resources
  • Occasionally co-facilitate or observe training sessions to ensure learning effectiveness and field relevance
  • Adapt learning solutions for diverse audiences, including craft professionals, frontline leaders, and office staff

Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
  • Measure training effectiveness using evaluations, assessments, and performance feedback
  • Incorporate learner feedback and operational data to continuously improve content
  • Maintain and update learning content to reflect changes in codes, regulations, or company practices

Other Duties as assigned
  • Actively contribute as a member of the Learning and Development Team by collaborating on shared goals, aligning efforts across departments, and supporting team priorities
  • Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Represent the company at business events such as client functions, industry conferences, and professional organizations

Position involves sitting for extended periods of time at employee’s work station.  Employee needs to be able to lift up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and ability to distinguish between colors on graphs and charts.

Occasionally, employee will be required to visit construction jobsites which may expose the employee to dirt, dust, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

In alignment with our commitment to pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is $76,000-$114,000, excluding fringe benefits or potential bonuses. If you join McGough, your final base salary will be determined by several factors, including geography, location, skills, education, and experience. Furthermore, we place significant value on pay equity among our current team members as part of any final job offer.

Please note that the range provided above reflects the hiring range for this role. Hiring near the top end of this range would be atypical, as we aim to allow room for future salary growth.
