Instructional Designer - School of Medicine and Health ServicesThe
University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for a full-time, Instructional Designer position for the School of Medicine and Health Services (SMHS).
This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Services.
Job Type: Full-time, Exempt
Specific Job Duties: - Manages and develops online and face-to-face courses in Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) for SMHS.
- Assists in training/onboarding of new instructors and staff to Moodle either in-person or online.
- Reviews current courses and works with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to update, revise, and maintain courses based on standards provided by the Teaching and Learning Center.
- Continuing education on best practices for instructional methods.
- Requests courses from ITR and works with lead instructors to import course material.
- Monitors the course development process to meet course offering deadlines.
- Assure courses meet accessibility and design standards.
- Integrating and troubleshooting third party instructional tools in the learning management system.
- Regularly revises the student and instructor onboarding courses with updated information.
- Assist students who are enrolled in SMHS classes.
- Answer questions that students may have about Moodle either online or in person.
- Schedule meetings with students for training on Moodle.
- Collaborate across campus
- Maintain a connection from SMHS to ITR department
- Request COMS courses to be made in Moodle
- Troubleshoot technical issues with ITR department
- Answer ITR tickets and emails that come in from students in SMHS programs.
- Connect with the Teaching and Learning Center and offer resources to SMHS instructors.
- Have proficient knowledge of multimedia platforms
- Be able to create images, edit and format videos, and develop podcasts or other auditory mediums.
- Adobe suite (i.e. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc.), Camtasia, Snagit, ProToolsFirst, Canva, Google suite (i.e. Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Chat, Calendar, Gmail, Sites, Meet), Office 365 (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Articulate Rise/Storyline
- Connect with the multimedia department on campus
- Work in Slate (Admissions database) for recording online presentations and other various COMS presentations
- Publish the Journal of Medical Science at the end of each DMSc semester and provide assistance to students.
- Provide ideas and implement new technologies/practices
- Stay up-to-date and knowledgeable with current trends across higher education
- Attend brainstorming sessions on best practices
- Create demonstrations of the technology/practices and set expectations for said technology/practices.
- Attend and participate in the Professional Development Institute meetings
- Attend and participate in D2L LMS training.
- Work with SMEs to develop their courses and develop a timeline of expectations.
- Communicate clearly and efficiently.
- Seek out cross-training opportunities with other departments.
- Attends and participates in College and committee meetings.
- Assists with updates to the school website
- Have proficient knowledge of Google, including different functions and specializations within Google Suite.
- Assists with the school email box, responds to potential students with appropriate information.
- College committee assignments: primarily Curriculum Committee
- Maintains confidentiality of all student information in compliance with FERPA standards
- Performs other duties assigned by COMS leadership
Qualifications
Experience/Skills:
- 2-5 years of experience working with faculty or SMEs in higher education or professional setting required.
- Background in usability and experience design, information design, and communications.
- Experience developing instructor-led, online, in-person, and mobile courses.
- Experience with eLearning technology tools, project management tools, and learning management systems (Moodle, D2L, and Articulate Rise/Storyline experience preferred).
- Expertise creating accessible and usable Web pages.
- Experience with HTML and editing tools for Web text and graphics.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, or spreadsheet and database management
- Experience with PhotoShop, H5P, and video is a plus.
- Communication and interpersonal skills, excellent file management, documentation, project management, writing, editing, collaboration, and a positive approach to customer service are required.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to multitask under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form.
- Ability to work independently as a member of a high-performing team with shared goals.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Education, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or Educational Technology.
- Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience.

Schedule:
- 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (7.5 hours/day with some evenings and weekends to meet needs of the department may be required
