We are seeking an experienced and nimble Instructional Designer Senior to join our growing Innovation and Emerging Technologies team to lead large, dynamic instructional design projects. Every day, you’ll make a difference in the lives of others by working at the intersection of cutting-edge pedagogy, emerging technologies, and universal design to craft engaging digital experiences that empower learners worldwide.
ASU has partnered with the United States military to reimagine their learning ecosystem and to encourage and promote lifelong learning during a service member's time in and out of the uniform. In this exciting role, you’ll collaborate closely with faculty, instructors, subject matter experts, and cross-functional teams to design and develop engaging, learner-centered experiences. You’ll apply proven instructional design methodologies and adult learning theories to co-create content and experiences that resonate with learners across the globe and lifespan, all while optimizing workflows and processes to support scalable, efficient development.
While a deep knowledge of the U.S. military is not necessary to be successful in this role, we are looking for an individual who is passionate about innovation, design thinking, prototyping, access to education, and who loves working on complex, innovative, high-visibility projects that push the status quo. You will contribute to our vision of academic excellence, innovative course design, and next generation learning technologies that converge to create transformative student experiences.
Essential Duties:
- Crafts dynamic learning experiences.
Designs engaging, learner-centered courses in collaboration with subject matter experts. Develops curriculum maps, objectives, and modular activities that apply adult learning theory, instructional design methods, and innovative technologies to create interactive, impactful learning opportunities.
- Cultivates digital learning innovation.
Keeps curriculum fresh and relevant through needs analyses and content reviews. Translates best practices in instructional design into compelling digital resources and interactive materials that enhance the online student experience. Adapts in-person to hybrid or flipped classroom formats with engaging digital experiences that preserve interaction and deepen learning.
- Champions creative technology solutions.
Stays ahead of emerging technologies to shape creative instructional strategies and guide technology integration. Establishes and enforces design standards to ensure courses are consistent, high quality, and aligned with institutional goals.
- Supports digital learning asset design and optimizes course design workflows.
Oversees the end-to-end design and delivery of flexible, reusable online content. Coordinates with SMEs, designers, and media specialists while streamlining workflows to strengthen collaboration and efficiency.
- Builds technical expertise and embraces new challenges.
Leverages authoring tools, multimedia platforms, and presentation technologies to develop custom digital learning solutions. Leads curriculum development teams by setting goals, managing timelines, and aligning projects with program objectives in a dynamic, evolving environment.
- Performs other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a related area.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills with SMEs and vendors; demonstrated ability to provide clear, precise guidance to non-technical users.
- Demonstrated proficiency in learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle) and troubleshooting technology issues.
- Demonstrated proactive, adaptable self-starter who thrives under deadlines and changing priorities.
- Evidence of being a detail-oriented team player skilled in managing projects, meeting deliverables, and producing high-quality work.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Universal Design principles and accessibility requirements.
- Experience with adaptive, active, and student-centered learning strategies, including design thinking and problem-based, project-based learning.
- Teaching experience in military, higher education, or continuing education settings.
- Some travel is required.

Salary & Benefits:
$70,000 - $90,000 per year, DOE
