Lead, Formative Product Measurement Full Description

Role Summary
The Lead, Formative Product Measurement is accountable for leading the execution and evolution of the measurement strategy across our formative assessment portfolio.

This role operates within and advances the broader formative measurement vision for the organization, helping translate strategic direction into scalable measurement systems, research programs, and AI-enabled innovation.

In close partnership with executive measurement leadership, this role shapes the continued development of our precision learning architecture through methodological leadership, applied research, and cross-functional collaboration.

This leader oversees psychometrics, learner and domain modeling, AI-assisted measurement and learning innovation, and the research agenda that underpins product design, efficacy, and validity.

Key Responsibilities
1. Measurement Strategy & Product Architecture
  • Lead execution and continuous improvement of the formative measurement strategy including diagnostic measurement design, learner and domain models, and recommender systems with adaptive feedback loops.
  • Operationalize measurement systems connecting content, scoring, reporting, AI-enabled insights, and instructional guidance.
  • Ensure alignment between measurement design and assessment-as-learning principles with Learning Science teams.
  • Guide integration of AI-assisted academic guidance and AI-scored written and spoken assessments.
2. Psychometrics & Methodological Innovation
  • Oversee psychometric design, calibration, scaling, and maintenance of formative item banks.
  • Lead methodological research on diagnostic models, adaptive systems, reporting frameworks, and AI-scoring validation.
  • Advance modern measurement approaches in applied formative contexts.
  • Ensure measurement decisions are empirically grounded and aligned with intended use.
3. Validity & Interpretive Frameworks
  • Lead development of validity arguments supporting rigorous aligned content, score interpretations, instructional recommendations, and AI-assisted academic guidance.
  • Oversee research establishing reliability, fairness, comparability, and appropriate use.
  • Ensure AI-assisted features are supported by defensible interpretive claims.
  • Partner to publish methodological and validity findings aligned with enterprise thought leadership priorities.
4. Efficacy & Impact Research
  • Lead execution of the formative product efficacy agenda.
  • Oversee studies demonstrating improvements in student learning and instructional decision-making.
  • Translate research findings into commercialization narratives with Product and Marketing.
  • Ensure studies meet rigorous methodological standards and are suitable for publication.
5. AI-Assisted Measurement Leadership
  • Partner with AI Science, Learning Science, and Content teams to establish academic and measurement guardrails for AI-assisted learning measurement and learner guidance
  • Contribute to AI-innovations in measurement and learning
  • Develop defensible frameworks for AI-assisted insights and recommendations
  • Ensure traceability, fairness, and defensible AI use in measurement systems.
6. Cross-Functional & Commercial Partnership
  • Collaborate with Product Management on prioritization decisions grounded in measurement impact and roadmap alignment.
  • Support commercialization through technical documentation, research insights, and thought leadership.
  • Translate complex psychometric concepts into clear narratives for diverse stakeholders.
7. Team Leadership
  • Lead and develop a team of psychometricians and researchers focused on formative measurement innovation.
  • Build a research-forward culture rooted in rigor, clarity, collaboration, and impact.
  • Establish research standards and best practices across formative initiatives.

Qualifications
Required
  • PhD in Psychometrics, Educational Measurement, Quantitative Psychology, Statistics, or related field.
  • Deep expertise in diagnostic measurement and learner modeling.
  • Experience applying modern psychometric approaches in product environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or validating adaptive or recommender-based systems.
  • Strong understanding of validity theory and argument-based validation.
  • Experience leading efficacy or impact research studies.
  • Experience collaborating with product, AI science, and technology teams.
Preferred
  • Experience validating AI technologies
  • Familiarity with learner models, domain models, recommender systems and machine learning applications in educational contexts.
  • Experience integrating learning science principles into assessment design.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.
  • Experience leading teams in a product-based organization.

  • Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York State, New York City, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington DC laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
  • The full-time salary range is between $165,000 - $185,000.
