Description
The Managing Editor, Spanish is a senior-level language matter expert position that combines expert-level of content development for Spanish educational language materials, exceptional editing skills, leadership, and native or near-native proficiency in the language of the materials being developed. As a Managing Editor, you will strategically oversee the editorial processes as well as the full content development of print and digital world language materials. You determine the editorial content and ensure it aligns with curriculum standards for publication. You will supervise and manage the editorial team.

Responsibilities
1- Strategically oversee the editorial processes 
Editorial Project Management:
  • Oversee the end-to-end editorial process, including content planning, creation, editing, and distribution. 
  • Collaborate with editorial project managers and stakeholders to establish timelines, allocate resources effectively, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality content. 
  • Monitor project progress and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Editorial Leadership: 
  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the editorial team. Set editorial goals, establish standards, and drive continuous improvement in content quality and effectiveness.
  • Keep abreast of language pedagogy, industry trends, and emerging best practices to inform and shape the organization's editorial approach. 
  • Seek opportunities, conversations, and deliverables on new products and partnerships.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation: 
  • Stay current with emerging pedagogical trends for world language, technologies, and best practices in editing, content creation, and distribution. 
  • Continuously seek opportunities to innovate editorial processes, tools, and methodologies to drive efficiency, effectiveness, and audience engagement.
  • Contributes to identifying and defining new core capabilities and functionalities for our Learning Management System (LMS) to enhance language learning.
  • Oversee the product line's life cycle and anticipate any problems.
  • Evaluates market competition and position the product line so that it appeals to consumers.
  • Conducts market analysis to identify opportunities and trends and communicates with key company decision-makers.
  • Provides Product Briefs and necessary assets to the marketing team so they can create all collateral necessary to launch the product to market.
  • Attends professional conferences such as ACTFL National Conference and other important professional gatherings nationwide.
2- Strategically oversee the content development 
Content Strategy and Planning: 
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive content strategy and roadmap aligned with the organization's goals, educational objectives, and curriculum standards. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including writers, authors, language experts, multimedia developers, photo stock agencies, illustrators, tech developers, and graphic designers, to develop language educational materials for print and digital delivery ensuring content supports business objectives and delivers value to the audience.
Project Budgeting: 
  • Collaborate with editors, editorial project managers, and other stakeholders to develop budgets for all projects assigned to the team. This involves estimating the costs associated with content development, editing, design, production, and any other related expenses. Monitor project expenditures to ensure they stay within the allocated budget. If there are deviations or potential overspending, managing editors may work with editors and Editorial Project Managers to identify cost-saving measures or reallocate resources.
Quality Assurance and Compliance: 
  • Establish and enforce rigorous quality assurance processes to ensure all content meets the highest standards of accuracy, reliability, and compliance. 
  • Conduct comprehensive fact-checking, research, and source verification. Ensure adherence to legal, ethical, and industry-specific guidelines.
3-Supervise and manage the editorial team
Team Management: 
  • Lead and manage a team of editors and contractors, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of team members. 
  • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure the team's productivity and performance meet or exceed expectations. 
  • Attracts, hires, and retains high-performing staff to support products and platforms.
4-Other Responsibilities
Editing and Writing Excellence: 
  • Apply expert-level editing to ensure the highest quality of written content. Review and refine content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and style consistency, as well as adherence to the organization's editorial guidelines, educational objectives, and curriculum standards.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to writers and authors to enhance content clarity, coherence, and impact. 
  • Writes original content as needed in English or in the target language as a contributor writer or co-author.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Communication: 
  • Foster strong relationships and effective communication with stakeholders, including executives, writers, graphic designers, marketing, and subject matter experts. 
  • Collaborate closely to understand objectives, provide clear guidance, and address feedback to align content with strategic goals and audience needs.
  • Provides or facilitates product training to key cross-functional teams in the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in World Languages, Teaching, or a related field (or equivalent experience). An advanced degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience as an editor, with a track record of exceptional skills in editing, content, and curriculum development.
  • Proven experience in a leadership or managerial role, preferably in an editorial capacity.
  • Advanced High or native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in teaching a second language or experience related to education and second language acquisition.
  • Leadership and experience in curriculum development.
  • Full knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards.
  • Experience in educational publishing is a plus.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using editing tools, content management systems, and other relevant software.
  • Advanced knowledge of style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to drive content strategy and direction.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using editorial tools, content management systems, and other relevant software.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Tech-savvy, innovative, and forward-thinking.
  • Experience with common software applications such as Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat, Word processing, Excel sheets, and PowerPoint.
