Position Purpose
The CSUB Project Rebound program supports the success of the formerly incarcerated by offering the opportunity and resources needed to successfully transition and acclimate to a college campus, offering special admissions and access to a quality education. Under the general supervision of the Director, the Project Rebound Program & Outreach Advisor provides outreach, recruitment, and academic success support to prospective and enrolled Project Rebound students, delivering individualized pre-enrollment advising, admissions-related support, and academic planning. The incumbent conducts recruitment presentations, facilitates information sessions and orientations, maintains ongoing communication with students through admissions and matriculation, and serves as a liaison with campus and community partners. The position also provides administrative and program support, leads student assistants, maintains recruitment/student data, and collaborates with Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, and Care Team partners.
Duties and Responsibilities
Outreach:
- Recruit prospective Project Rebound students in the Central Valley through in-person/virtual presentations at correctional facilities, community colleges, and community events
- Provide individualized pre-enrollment services (academic assessment, admissions advising, financial aid) to help students prepare to apply
- Serve as liaison building relationships with campus constituents, community colleges, correctional facilities, and other stakeholders
- Schedule and conduct admissions presentations at correctional facilities, community colleges, and transitional housing
- Coordinate and facilitate information sessions and orientations for prospective and newly admitted students
- Connect matriculated students with campus/community resources supporting academic success and basic needs
- Communicate with parole and probation officials as needed on behalf of students
- Partner with University Outreach to recruit eligible students; build the transfer bridge between Bakersfield College Rising Scholars and Project Rebound
- Maintain regular contact with currently incarcerated enrolled/prospective students through release and admissions
Administrative Program Support & Special Projects:
- Input and monitor prospective student recruitment data and documents
- Develop and update electronic and printed outreach and promotional materials
- Provide lead direction for student assistants
- Coordinate opportunities for Project Rebound students to build community within the program and campus
- Coordinate program initiatives, events, and workshops providing student success resources
- Assist with Care Team meetings for at-risk students, tracking academic progress and follow-up actions
- Serve as liaison within the Project Rebound consortium and with other CSU Project Rebound Programs
Academic Success Planning:
- Provide academic planning including course selection support and educational plan development
- Provide planning related to withdrawals, academic notice recovery, and avoiding academic disqualification
- Offer guidance considering financial aid status, Department of Rehabilitation participation, and learning preferences
- Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Academic Advisory School on programs and curriculum materials
- Track students from matriculation through first year, ensuring accurate academic records
- Review admissions documents/transcripts, provide eligibility assessments, and process admissions decisions as referred
Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field, plus two (2) years of recent related experience
- Specialized experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis; a master's degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of professional experience
- Possession of a valid driver's license, or ability to obtain by date of hire
- Must be an advocate for formerly incarcerated students; ability to effectively communicate with small and large groups in carceral settings
- Working knowledge of Project Rebound program practices, procedures, and activities
- Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, gather and analyze data, and draw valid conclusions
- Intermediate computer skills with word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and online calendaring/email systems
- Must have reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout the Central Valley and San Joaquin Valley
- Must be willing to travel for occasional off-site training and to work occasional holidays / adjusted hours, including emergency callback
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience advocating for the needs of formerly incarcerated students
- Experience collaborating with statewide entities supporting educational attainment for formerly incarcerated individuals
- Customer-oriented, service-centered attitude in an institutional/educational environment
Compensation, Physical Demands, and Additional Notices
- Anticipated hiring range: starting salary not expected to exceed $5,083/month; CSU classification salary range $5,083-$7,228/month
- Benefits include medical/dental/vision plans, CalPERS retirement, CSU tuition waiver, up to 24 vacation days/year, unlimited sick leave accrual, and 15 paid holidays/year
- Physical demands: light work, mainly sitting with up to 25% standing/walking; lifting limited to 25 pounds
- Satisfactory background check (including criminal records check) required
- This is a sensitive position under CSU designation
