Job Summary:
The Digital Accessibility Specialist is responsible for ensuring that digital resources and content are accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. This role ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, rules, and guidelines, including Office of Civil Rights standards and regulations. The Digital Accessibility Specialist is responsible for accessibility audits, preparing reports, providing recommendations and collaborating with teams to implement accessibility solutions. This position also conducts investigations as needed to ensure compliance and maintain a culture of equal opportunity, health and safety, international services, disability services and research quality. The Digital Accessibility Specialist develops and implements solutions in collaboration with designers, developers, and content creators to address accessibility issues and enhance the user experience.
 
What to expect in this role:
  • Accessibility Audits and Evaluations
    • Use automated and manual testing tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE, JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) to evaluate and validate accessibility.
    • Conduct thorough assessments of websites, applications, and digital content to identify accessibility issues and ensure compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards.
    • Identify and document accessibility barriers.
    • Develop and implement solutions to address identified accessibility barriers, collaborating with designers, developers, and content creators.
    • Update course materials submitted by the curriculum, including student-facing documents, for ADA compliance.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
    • Document accessibility findings, track progress, and provide reports to stakeholders.
    • Assist with other practice areas in Curriculum to ensure that content maintains a high level of accessibility.
    • Continuously assess and refine accessibility processes to improve efficiency and user experience.
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
    • Consult on course design and technology implementations to ensure inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities.
    • Partner with faculty and instructional designers to review and improve the accessibility of course materials, assessments, multimedia content, and the Learning Management System.
    • Collaborate with Student Accessibility Services to address student accommodation needs in digital environments and help resolve complex accessibility challenges.
  • Innovation
    • Research, test, and implement emerging tools, technologies, and strategies that improve user experience and ensure compliance.
    • Continuously monitor and apply the latest updates to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) accessibility guidelines.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in learning design and technology, curriculum and instruction, web development/design, information technology, computer science, or related area.
  • Certification from one of the following: International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP): CPACC (certified professional of accessible core competencies), WAS (web accessibility specialist), or ADS (accessible document specialist); or the Section 508 Trusted Tester from DHS.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in digital accessibility or UX required
  • Preferred: Knowledgeable with D2L’s Brightspace and/or other LMS systems.
 
What we’re looking for
  • Knowledge of disability law, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Experience using assistive technologies and accessibility testing tools (e.g., screen readers, WAVE, Axe)
  • Experience with web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and ARIA.
  • Extensive knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards and guidelines.
  • Limited experience with accessibility conformance documentation such as VPATs and ACRs.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of popular assistive technology (e.g Dragon, Naturally Speaking, JAWS, ClaroRead)
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to learn emerging technologies.
  • Effective analytical skills with the ability to assess situations, resolve issues or make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Capable of building strong working relationships across teams, departments and Schools.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, balance competing demands for time, and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and writing skills for effective partnership across remote teams, departments, and academic Schools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a professional demeanor with people at all levels within the organization.
  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of emerging educational technologies, including Web 3.0, and AI-powered tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Google Workspace applications (Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) including Chat and Google Hangout plus MS Office.
