Job Description:
The Knowledge Enterprise Secure Cloud (KESC) is a suite of secure computing services at ASU that includes dedicated virtual machines, a HIPAA-compliant supercomputer, and secure data storage. KESC Systems Administrators in ASU Research Computing (RC) are entrusted with finding and supporting solutions for some of the most challenging problems at the University. As a secure systems administrator in KESC, you will support regulated and restricted data systems, working directly with researchers managing sensitive datasets, including HIPAA-regulated health data and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). This role requires expertise across diverse technical areas such as Linux administration, Windows administration, virtualization, secure networking, system troubleshooting, and data management in regulated environments. You will collaborate closely with researchers and compliance experts to deliver secure, high-performance computing solutions that directly impact innovative research at ASU.
This position manages infrastructure and supports research subject to
ITAR (Title 22 of the US Code of Federal Regulations) and
EAR (Title 15 of the US Code of Federal Regulations) control and requires candidates to meet the definition of US person as defined in as defined by
22 C.F.R. § 120.62 and 15 C.F.R. § 772.1.Essential Duties:
- Participate fully in building, configuring, and running secure systems at scale
- Maintain operating systems, VM images, security updates, and upgrades in the KESC environment
- Monitor secure systems, resolving issues as they arise
- Work with researchers on hardware and software issues pertinent to regulated data, during office hours or via support tickets
- Abide by all department policies and procedures regarding best practices for systems operations and support tickets
- Abide by all regulated KESC policies and procedures for the maintenance, configuration, and operation of secure systems
- Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT (e.g., system administrators, network, and security) and Data Center partners (including vendors) in a timely manner to resolve issues as they arise.
- Participate in the rotating on-call schedule (after hours emergencies and tickets)
- Create scripts, adding automation as needed
- Document new processes, updating documentation as needed
- Provision virtual machines for secure and regulated research
- Provision storage for secure and regulated research
Desired Qualifications:
Evidence of:
- Secure and regulated data and systems-specific knowledge (HIPAA-regulated data, CUI)
- Familiarity with NIST control frameworks including 800-171 and/or 800-53
Experience in:
- Regulated and restricted data environments
- Secure systems environments
- Scripting languages (bash, python, powershell)
- Monitoring and alerting stacks (Prometheus, Nagios, Icinga)
- Networking (Ethernet / Infiniband)
- Logging tools (Elasticsearch, Syslog)
- Dashboarding (Grafana, Kibana)
- Hypervisors (Xenserver)
- Containers (Apptainer, K8s, Docker)
- Version control and Git (Gitlab, GitHub)
- Databases (MariaDB, MongoDB, MySQL)
- Storage (Isilon, CEPH, Qumulo, Powerstore, BeeGFS, ISCSI/block storage)
- Physical hardware (troubleshooting/mounting/fixing server equipment)
- 4-5 years experience with Unix/Linux environments
Working Environment:
- Some activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Be comfortable in a hybrid work environment (In person/Datacenter/Zoom)
- Must have reliable transportation to campus and the Datacenter
- Parking on campus is not provided but is available through self-pay or via University parking passes

- Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, calculator, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
