Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The University College offers a comprehensive array of academic support services geared towards facilitating the smooth transition of first- and second-year students into the university environment. Through Academic Advising, Academic Success Coaching, Tutoring, Supplemental Learning, and a host of other resources, we aim to empower students to navigate their academic journey successfully. Our primary objective is to guide students towards timely graduation within four years while also nurturing their holistic development throughout their college experience.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Senior Academic Advisor provides academic advisement to NCCU’s University College constituents (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, and presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. This position assesses individual student situations and circumstances, to create, implement and monitor students’ academic progression, retention, and holistic development with the support of internal/external organizations and resources that meet student needs.

In addition to providing direct support to students, the Senior Academic Advisor plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of excellence within the advising unit. This leadership extends to: (1) Coordinating advising initiatives, including the development of programming, facilitating new employee training, conducting academic appeal reviews, and supporting various endeavors within University College. (2) Offering mentorship to colleagues by sharing best practices and ensuring adherence to university policies and procedures. (3) Proactively identifying opportunities and implementing strategies to bolster student retention rates and actively engage students in their academic journeys. (4) Representing University College on campus committees to ensure its interests are advocated for and actively collaborating with campus partners to enhance the student experience. (5) Providing supportive leadership to the Academic Advising Coordinator and Associate Dean in steering key unit initiatives and sustaining a collaborative team environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in education, counseling, or similar related field required, with three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in higher education to include excellent advising preferred.

(2) Offering mentorship to colleagues by sharing best practices and ensuring adherence to university policies and procedures.
