Senior Editor
New York, New York
Full time
Job Description:
NOTE: This role is based in NYC and requires a minimum of three days a week in the SoHo, NY office.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Scholastic MATH is a magazine that connects current events to the math students are learning in grades 6 through 9. We are looking to hire a Senior Editor with a love of communicating math in exciting ways to young audiences. This editor will work on all components of the product including the production of engaging feature articles, math-related news stories, online games, worksheets, videos, and additional teaching resources. This job requires an ability to think creatively to generate visually appealing, kid-friendly stories that use real-world data to illustrate math skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards for Math and other state-specific math standards like the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Scholastic MATH is the answer to the question math students ask every day: When am I going to use this? We are seeking a highly organized high-level contributor with keen attention to detail to join the team.
Scholastic MATH is one of more than 30 magazines spanning grades pre-K through 12 and educational disciplines. Scholastic MATH’s Senior Editor will also work closely with the other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) editors to ensure that our five STEAM titles have a shared strategy and cohesive messaging. This is a collaborative work environment; the right candidate will be able to fluently express themself during discussions with individual coworkers as well as in larger group settings.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with the Editorial Director and Education Editor to develop highly engaging nonfiction texts and editorial assets including feature articles, news shorts, videos, and games that cover a range of standards-aligned math topics for grades 6 through 9.
- Research and pitch story ideas that meet all three of the following criteria: are visually appealing, are of high interest to young audiences, and teach a specific math skill.
- Write one or more feature articles per issue and have full ownership: conducting interviews, writing and revising copy, requesting images, working with art director to finesse layouts for editor’s approval, inputting fact check changes and copy edits, and giving the article its final read.
- Oversee the ideation and creation of Scholastic MATH’s Teacher’s Guide and online teaching materials, including lesson plans, activity sheets, and answer key—shepherding these assets through the full editorial process with minimal oversight.
- Review, edit, and proof copy, layouts, and mathematics content, ensuring information is accurate and adheres strongly to grade-appropriate math standards.
- Assist Education Editor with newsletters and subscriber surveys as needed.
