Position Summary
The Senior Instructional Designer is a key leader within the Learning & Development function, responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high-impact learning solutions that strengthen operational capability, leadership excellence, and long-term talent growth across Hayes/Knight-Swift. This role leads the instructional design strategy for all signature programs—including the Warehouse Trainer Program, REACH —ensuring alignment with WEROQ values, business priorities, and industry best practices.
The Senior Instructional Designer partners closely with cross-functional leaders, HR, Operations, SMEs, and executives to build learning experiences that are practical, engaging, data-driven, and designed for a fast-paced warehousing and logistics environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads the end-to-end instructional design process for all signature programs, including onboarding, the Warehouse Trainer Program, leadership development programs, and enterprise capability-building initiatives.
- Designs engaging, blended learning experiences using modern methodologies (e-learning, ILT/VILT, scenario-based learning, microlearning, simulations, and on-the-job application tools).
- Establishes instructional design standards, templates, and quality expectations for all L&D content and programs.
- Partners with SMEs, Department/Warehouse Leaders, HR, and executive sponsors to define program goals, learning outcomes, success measures, and required capabilities.
- Builds assessment tools, knowledge checks, performance assessments, and coaching resources to ensure real-world application of skills.
- Ensures all content aligns with adult learning theory, organizational values (WEROQ), and business objectives.
- Supervises and provides day-to-day guidance to the Instructional Designer, ensuring work quality, project alignment, and professional growth.
- Oversees the project prioritization and distribution within the team.
- Provides design oversight for enterprise onboarding, role-specific training pathways, operational upskilling, and capability standards.
- Designs and maintains all leadership development content, including assessments, learning paths, ILTs, vILTs, and multimedia content.
- Develops structured curriculum maps, 30/60/90 plans, on-the-job training guides, and competency-based development tools for warehouse roles.
- Establishes success metrics and evaluation strategies for all programs.
- Analyzes training results, LMS data, evaluations, and feedback to make continuous improvements.
- Curates, aligns, and integrates external learning content (e.g., Go1) into learning pathways and programs, ensuring third-party resources complement internal training, leadership development initiatives, and organizational capability needs.
- Prepares reporting for HR and Operations executives on program outcomes, learner performance, and ROI.
- Uses the LMSandHubSpot,Articulate360, and other digital learning tools to develop, track, and manage training programs.
- Oversees digital content standards, LMS structuring for new programs, and technology integration.
- Stays current on industry trends in L&D, leadership development, logistics/warehouse training, and learning technologies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
- 4-7+ years of experience in instructional design, L&D, or leadership development, preferably in warehousing, distribution, or manufacturing environments.
- Proven experience building large-scale upskilling and leadership development programs.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of adult learning theory, curriculum development, and digital learning tools.
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Articulate 360, Vyond, Camtasia and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate equipment.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Extended periods of sitting and computer work are also common.
Work Environment
- Primarily an office environment but may involve time on the production floor or in other operational areas as needed.
- Exposure to warehouse or production floor conditions, including varying temperatures and noise levels.
Travel Requirements
- Occasional travel may be required, up to 15%, for training sessions or to support multi-location training needs.
Equipment Used
- Computer, projector, phone, printer, and other standard office equipment.
- May also use training-specific tools, such as learning management systems (LMS) or multimedia presentation tools.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position supervises the Instructional Designer, providing coaching, direction, quality oversight, and project leadership to ensure the successful creation of scalable training programs across all sites and functions.
