Senior Product Designer Full Description

About AoPS and Beast Academy

At Art of Problem Solving, our mission is to discover, inspire, and train the great problem solvers of the next generation.  We train many of the most elite math students in the world, including all members of the US International Math Olympiad team. Despite this impact, AoPS remains relatively unknown to the broader public.

AoPS is unique because it is vertically integrated: it develops its own curriculum, runs its own physical learning centers, employs teachers, and has a robust and capable product, design, and engineering team. Today, our curriculum and academic programs are absolutely world-class, but our digital experiences are dated.

As a Senior Designer, you will play a key role in reimagining Beast Academy Online, the digital learning experience for elementary students learning advanced mathematics. You’ll be a core member of a small, mission-driven team in San Francisco, partnering directly with our Head of Beast Academy, curriculum designers, engineers, and the broader AoPS organization to build products that make math irresistible to young learners.

What You’ll do:

Build Delightful, High Impact Experiences

You'll design experiences that engage, challenge, and inspire students to go deeper. You feel the pain of clunky interactions, and strive for building an experience that feels so simple and natural even a 3 year old could navigate it. Whether through intuitive interfaces, gamification, AI support for kids, seamless integration with our paper books, or novel interaction patterns, you'll create experiences that truly resonate with young learners.

Elevate The Team and our Craft

You'll champion continuous improvement across our design practice by evolving our design system, elevating our information architecture, and refining our visual language. Through thoughtful critiques and collaboration, you'll help teammates sharpen their craft. You're shaping how we think about user-centered design while charting our design vision.

Drive our mission and strategy

You'll dig deep into user needs to identify the opportunities that drive our mission and strategy forward. Through research, observation, and genuine curiosity about how kids learn, you'll surface insights that shape what we build next.

Own the Entire Journey

From research through launch and beyond, you'll shape what we build. You’re scrappy and move fast: building quick prototypes, testing with real families, iterating based on what you learn. You blend deep empathy for families with quantitative insights to drive decisions. You'll advocate fiercely to ensure we’re solving real problems in ways that truly work for the families we serve.

Communicate With Impact

You'll keep stakeholders informed with clear rationale and early warnings when challenges emerge. You tell compelling stories that bring designs to life and help others see what you see. You'll present confidently while remaining open to feedback and iteration.

Stay Sharp

You're curious about emerging design trends, interaction patterns, and what makes digital experiences magical for kids. You're always expanding your toolkit and bringing fresh ideas to the team.

Build AoPS Culture in SF

You'll help establish and amplify AoPS culture in our SF office. You'll get to know how we approach problem-solving through our values, mission, and collaborative spirit and translate that culture to the Bay Area while fostering strong connections with our teams at HQ in San Diego.

The ideal candidate has:

  • 5+ years of UX/UI, Interaction, or Product Design experience
  • Solid online portfolio showcasing exceptional design skills and systems thinking with a focus on user-centered design
  • Experience designing scalable, complex, large-scale consumer products
  • Experience developing innovative design solutions and participating in the design process from end-to-end
  • Ability to work independently and manage design work with high-level stakeholders
  • Ability to clearly communicate how design delivers on user, business, and product goals
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and creative skills
