 I. JOB OVERVIEW 
Job Description Summary:  | Under the direction of the Sr. Associate Vice Provost (SAVP) in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) the Senior Project Manager is responsible for leading and managing special projects and assignments associated with OVPR. Specifically, these projects are directly related to OVPR’s strategic initiatives in the following areas: research administration, research compliance, and interdisciplinary research. (These are special projects that are current or in development and the Senior Project Manager will be responsible for these projects.) The position provides guidance in project development and management, related planning and implementation, and administrative support for key organizational initiatives as assigned by the Sr. Associate Vice Provost for Research, Associate Provost for Research Integrity and Compliance (AP-RIC), and the Vice Provost for Research (VPR). The position works independently and proactively to ensure all tasks related to individual projects and assignments are completed in a timely and efficient manner with little or no administrative support. Responsible for a varied, complex scope of projects and initiatives, including long-range strategic initiatives and one-time assignments/projects that fall under the broad umbrella of the definition of “special projects.” Works in conjunction with OVPR leadership, unit leaders, research administrators, faculty, and other GW offices to pursue and achieve tactical or objectives related to the strategic vision as well as executing work necessary to meet short-term objectives.

Responsibilities include: Leads selected program-based special projects that require cross-functional engagement with key stakeholders across OVPR, university, and with external stakeholders, as appropriate. Provides staff support to the SAVP, AP-RIC and VPR for the convening of a range of meetings on short- or long-term projects of importance to OVPR and the university. This includes undertaking research, tracking trends, preparing presentations; development of meeting agendas; drafting briefing papers and/or compiling pertinent background materials for attendees; preparing summaries of discussion; coordinating logistical arrangements; and ensuring appropriate and effective communications with participants, as needed. Heads responsibility for taking raw ideas, hypotheses/ scenarios as well as shape them into comprehensive deployment plans to implement effectively, to include developing action plans, budgets, and briefings for projects as directed by the SAVP and OVPR leadership. Responsible for scoping and implementing OVPR’s special projects and strategic initiatives, including the development and implementation of long-range strategic initiatives, as determined by OVPR leadership. Contributes to the identification and resolution of inefficiencies in research administration workflows, particularly those related to systems, applications, and data management. Works in conjunction with OVPR leadership to pursue and achieve tactical or strategic objectives pertaining to the long-range strategic vision assisting in the execution of work necessary to meet short-term objectives as well. Ensures program/project continuity via proactive engagement with, monitoring of, and hands on management of select projects as directed by OVPR leadership. Collaborates with stakeholders to integrate emerging compliance requirements, sponsor guidelines, and institutional policies into research systems and processes. Works proactively to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner with little or no administrative support. Proactively identifies and engages individual experts, as well as informational resources, that can help frame and advance OVPR’s work on key trends or emerging issues in research administration and compliance. Provides facilitation and activities to assist OVPR teams and other research administration teams across the university with annual and long-term planning, group problem solving, process and service improvement meetings. Prepares solutions to problems and issues by determining the approaches to be taken and the methodologies to be used. Facilitates the development, coordination, and approval of proposed solutions with all necessary parties. Takes appropriate actions to resolve the problems in collaboration with all parties involved. Contingent upon availability of travel funds, attends conferences relevant to OVPR’s special projects and keep current with trends and developments in the fields of research administration and compliance. In the context of the university’s strategic plan, researches and analyzes issues that have the potential to impact OVPR and provide thought leadership on whether OVPR may play a meaningful role in advancing university interests. Prepares high-quality memos, reports and briefing materials for related events and activities. Researches, summarizes and advises senior leadership on current and emerging trends, challenges and opportunities in research administration and compliance and issues that would impact GW’s research enterprise. Manages external relationships, including cultivating and optimizing relationships with key constituents, acting as a liaison with key stakeholders, e.g., Research Support teams, GW Information Technology partners, vendors, and funders, and representing OVPR, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:  | Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
