About the team
A&G, STMJ Technology is a global team that builds and runs the platforms and services behind Elsevier's research and academic products. Within this, the Platform Engineering teamâpart of Operationsâfocuses on keeping our cloud environments reliable, secure and performing at scale.
The team works closely with engineering and support teams to monitor systems, respond to incidents and continuously improve how our platforms run. Led by the Platform Manager and aligned to the wider technology organisation, the team plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations while helping drive improvements across our AWS environment.
About the role
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in operating, maintaining and improving our AWS-based environments, ensuring systems are reliable, secure and scalable. You will take a proactive role in identifying risks, resolving complex issues and driving system improvements that enhance performance and resilience.
Working closely with engineering, support and platform teams, you will contribute to system design, automation and infrastructure as code, helping to build efficient and well-managed cloud environments. You will support incident response and recovery, while also improving monitoring, alerting and operational practices across the platform.
You will combine technical expertise with a practical, problem-solving approach to deliver continuous improvements and support the long-term scalability of our platform services.
Key Responsibilities
⢠Monitor system health and proactively manage risks to performance, stability, and security
⢠Diagnose and resolve complex system and performance issues
⢠Design and implement system improvements, configurations, and automation
⢠Support change management processes and impact assessments
⢠Develop infrastructure as code and automation scripts
⢠Collaborate with cross-functional teams and partners
⢠Share knowledge and support team development
⢠Improve monitoring, alerting, and reporting practices
⢠Support incident response and recovery readiness
⢠Contribute to scalability and capacity planning
⢠Apply security best practices
⢠Maintain clear documentation
Skills & Experience required:
⢠Experience with cloud-based platforms and AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, EKS)
⢠Familiarity with Linux/UNIX systems
⢠Experience with scripting or automation (e.g., Bash, Python)
⢠Understanding of DevOps and infrastructure as code practices
⢠Familiarity with Terraform, CloudFormation, or CI/CD pipelines
⢠Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., CloudWatch, New Relic)
⢠Knowledge of security, backup, and disaster recovery practices
⢠Strong problem-solving and communication skills
⢠Experience supporting system reliability and incident management
⢠Interest in mentoring and knowledge sharing
