Job Description
The Center for Cybersecurity and Trusted Foundations (CTF), part of ASU's Global Security Initiative (GSI), is seeking a coding-focused engineer to design, develop, and conduct research projects that advance the state of fully automated and human-assisted security analysis. This is a full-time position dedicated to driving innovation and discovery with real-world impact through research and development.

As part of the CTF team, the Staff Systems Engineer will collaborate closely with Center leadership and key affiliates to create technologies, tools, and best practices in binary analysis. The goal is to produce advances that can be transitioned to the broader security community, with opportunities for adoption in both industry and government.

Essential Duties
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, evaluation, documentation, testing, and user training of a next-generation cyber-physical system security framework.
  • Advance the development of the open-source binary analysis platform, angr, through design, implementation, evaluation, documentation, and testing.
  • Contribute to the creation of a next-generation Cyber Reasoning System for automated vulnerability discovery, attestation, and repair.
  • Collaborate with postdoctoral researchers and students by providing professional engineering expertise to ongoing research initiatives and sponsored projects.
  • Support CTF and GSI faculty by contributing to research projects and funded programs.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in cyber-physical systems, particularly in simulations and modeling.
  • Experience in firmware or cyber-physical system simulations, such as Renode, Qemu, Gazebo.
  • Experience in both native and web GUI design, such as Qt, fastapi.
  • Three (3) years of experience in programming using Python.
  • Three (3) years of experience in programming using C/C++.
  • Experience in software reverse engineering and security analysis.
  • Three (3) years of experience in reverse engineering binary programs.
  • Experience in vulnerability discovery and exploitation in real-world binary programs.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining a large system/platform in Python or C/C++.
  • Experience in working with a team.

Working Environment
  • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position.
  • Constantly detects and operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties.
  • Expected to be responsive to customers, engaged in work production, resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.

The Center for Cybersecurity and Trusted Foundations (CTF), part of ASU's Global Security Initiative, brings together leading faculty, graduate students, and software engineers for impactful research and education efforts. In partnerships with government agencies and industry, current research activities involve malware reverse-engineering, next-generation authentication, identity management, dark web economics, automated binary analysis systems, human collaborations with automated cyber reasoning systems, and advanced decompilation.
