General Description | The Student Services Generalist is the primary contact with student-athletes seeking advising. The Generalist will be responsible for guiding students through the registration process by assisting with course selection leading to degree completion. The Generalist will perform academic advising functions and engage in institutional academic initiatives. The position offers unique advising capabilities to student-athletes seeking career advice or guidance for transfer or dual/joint admission programs. The position also works closely and collaboratively with relevant departments and constituent groups campus-wide, including the Academic Learning Center, faculty, disability support services, testing services, Academic Advisory Committee, American Honors and UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ Coaches to enhance the academic success of student-athletes. The Student Services Generalist ensures compliance with institutional, conference, and NJCAA (or other athletic governing bodies) regulations while promoting retention, academic achievement, and timely degree completion.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities
·· Develops academic and individual action plans in caseload to guide students toward on-time graduation; implements student retention programs as needed. · Coordinate effective communication to student caseload based on division major. This includes, but is not limited to phone calls, text messages, emails, and utilizing retention platform tools to reach out to students. · Collaborate with the academic division on updates and trainings pertaining to any changes with the academic catalog, program policies, programs, and procedures. · Assist students with student planning as it relates to course selection and registering for classes. · Answer basic student inquiries regarding admissions, financial aid, directed self-placement, and hand off to Student Services Associates. · Assists with new student orientations, financial literacy and other programs as assigned and provides on-going information to students, potential students, and parents regarding policies, programs, and procedures. · Reads, interprets, and communicates College policies and procedures. · Recommends improvements in department procedures. Collaborates with other staff/administrators/faculty to identify needed improvements in procedures and communication. · Ensures compliance with institutional, conference, and NJCAA (or other athletic governing bodies) regulations while promoting retention, academic achievement, and timely degree completion. · Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education Requirements |
· Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
Experience | · Outstanding customer service and communication skills. · Experience working with diverse student populations. · Familiar with multi-tasking, decision making, and conflict resolution. · Familiar with the courseload and demanding schedules student-athletes face. · Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Competencies and Skills Required | · Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, the general public, faculty, and other staff members. · Must be a “quick study” in order to quickly grasp knowledge of policies and procedures relating to every aspect of student services that a prospective or current student may utilize. · Analytical and problem-solving skills. · Ability to take required initiative to solve problems. · Ability to collaborate with others. · Commitment to student service and a diverse population. · Must be comfortable with using multiple tech platforms to effectively assist students. ·
Physical Demands and Work Environment | · This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.· Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.· No or very limited exposure to physical risk.Some travel required
Salary | $51,184

Terms of Employment | Full Time. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Frequent evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on and off- campus sites as needed by the college. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
