Job Summary | We are seeking a driven and talented Enterprise Infrastructure and Cloud Engineer to join a dynamic team with a wide breadth of technical knowledge as a Systems Engineer III. This individual will bring a passion for technology, a competent virtualization skill set, and an ability to deploy and configure production-ready solutions, services, and tools for our IT workloads using best practices and automation wherever possible. Familiarity with AI-driven automation and serverless architecture is highly desirable, with an emphasis on foundational knowledge and a willingness to learn and grow in these areas. The position plays a pivotal part in the organization’s Infrastructure Services, with opportunities to be involved at all stages of projects—governance, development, and operations. The engineer will serve as project manager for enterprise solutions, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, recommending best-fit solutions, and monitoring emerging technologies.
Minimum Education and Experience | Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience | BS degree with minimum 7 years of experience working directly with complex environments. Enterprise architectural understanding from compute resources, networking, security, data protection, and data governance from design to deployment and complete system lifecycle. Cloud certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect). Experience with cloud deployment, database architecture, networking, enterprise storage, data protection, and security architecture (EC2, ECS, VPC, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, Azure blob, Storage networking protocols, SMB/NFS File, etc.). 3+ years of experience in infrastructure, data center, or storage engineering. Experience with Windows, Linux operating systems, system hardware, virtualization, cloud, containerized environments, basic networking, storage, and data protection. Experience with scripting and automated processes. Experience with enterprise infrastructure design, development, and integration. Familiarity with security practices and technologies. Project management experience, including planning and execution of infrastructure projects. Strong documentation skills and attention to detail. Experience with deployment and functionality of container services (Docker, Kubernetes, Container Service). Understanding of high-performance storage, computing, and parallel file systems. Experience working in an educational research environment. Solid understanding of software design, software development, IP networking, Linux, Agile development, SCRUM, application/system lifecycle management, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, GCP, VMware, Nutanix, and Rubrik. Experience with Ansible/AWX, Terraform, CloudFormation, and/or PowerShell leveraging an automation approach. Ability to coordinate efforts of junior staff and manage projects independently. Good troubleshooting methodology and awareness of industry standards. Analytical in troubleshooting complex issues and attaining root cause analysis. Experience in cloud cost optimization and managing workloads in public and private cloud environments. Proficiency in Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure automation. Hands-on experience with AI-driven solutions, including Generative AI platforms and agentic AI workflows for IT operations. Experience designing and deploying serverless architectures on AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, or similar platforms. Expertise in enterprise backup, disaster recovery, and data protection technologies (e.g., Rubrik, Veeam, cloud-native backup).
Other Qualifications | To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities | Design, develop, and integrate enterprise infrastructure solutions, including servers, storage, networking, and cloud services (SAN, NAS, cloud storage, virtualization, containerization). Engineer and deploy solutions using automation (Ansible, AWX, Terraform, CloudFormation, PowerShell) and/or infrastructure as a code. Evaluate and integrate new technologies and systems into existing environments. Ensure scalability, reliability, performance, and security of infrastructure operations. Implement and maintain security measures to protect assets and data; monitor and respond to security incidents. Plan, execute, and manage infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including budgeting and resource management. Collaborate with IT, network, operations teams, vendors, and service providers to ensure seamless operations. Provide technical support and guidance to team members and stakeholders. Produce well-written technical project documentation and operational support materials. Lead Linux administration, automation, and disaster recovery initiatives. Manage inventory processes and support deployment of clusters and storage solutions. Participate in collaborative sessions to evaluate architectural platforms for services or systems. Monitor and manage the health of the enterprise environment. On-call availability for resolving service emergencies, both during regular and off-hours (24×7×365). Assist in annual asset management initiatives and decommissioning of assets. Document and surplus equipment.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions | Work performed in office, data center, or campus sites. Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be required. On-call availability may be necessary. Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and physical hazards associated with construction sites. Compliance with safety protocols, including use of PPE (gloves, hard hats, safety glasses). Familiarity with workplace safety standards, including electrical and cabling hazards. Ability to lift and transport moderately heavy objects (up to 70lbs), move through various spaces, and sit for extended periods. Moving on hands, knees, bending, crawling into various spaces. Visual acuity for network diagrams, devices, system marks, and troubleshooting tools. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and handle other components.
