Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Summary
The Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. Under minimal supervision, the Training Specialist conducts husbandry skill training, assessment, re-trainings as required, and completes additional training duties as assigned and provides classroom and hands-on training during new hire on-boarding for CCM animal care staff.
Job Duties
- Communicates professionally via phone or email with research staff and various CCM departments to coordinate trainings.
- Read & understand animal study protocols. -
- Coordinates and performs multiple trainings per day.
- Facilitates surgical training.
- Maintains proficiency in technical skills.
- Utilizes previously developed curricula and materials in support of training objectives.
- Participates in training facilitation via hands on instruction, technical demonstration in the vivarium, audio or video presentations or group discussion.
- Documents and retains training via physical & electronic records.
- Assists in evaluating training effectiveness and achievement of learning outcomes.
- Organize training materials and environments, including spaces, equipment, handouts, presentations, books, or other visuals.
- Supports husbandry & veterinary operations when needed.
- Assists with review of standard operating procedures.
- Assists with development of training materials.
- Provides monthly trainings to small or large groups of staff members.
- Utilizes Microsoft Office Suite and troubleshoots minor technical issues.
- Provides feedback to facility manager or direct supervisor of new hire proficiency and/or additional education or skills training needs.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Four years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification.
- Previous research and/or animal care and handling experience.
