Position Summary
The Physiology Department is seeking a candidate to serve as the HR Coordinator. The position will assist efforts to develop and help the department, its administrators, faculty, staff, and students using best practice HR methods and university-supported processes and policies. The Department has significant teaching and research missions. The position works with a global community of internationally recognized scholars from diverse nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds; two large undergraduate majors (Physiology and Neuroscience) with approximately 1,200 majors combined; the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology (MCIP) graduate program, popularly combined with professional degrees (MD, DO, DVM); and vibrant research programs in areas such as cancer biology, cardiac pathophysiology, diabetes and obesity, gastrointestinal health and disease, immunity and tissue inflammation, musculoskeletal diseases, molecular metabolism and disease, and neuroscience. In summary, the HR Coordinator's portfolio of duties includes but is not limited to:
- 40% Recruitment and Staffing: Assists with recruitment management, including search committee management, position advertising, travel arrangement, visitation planning and coordination, hiring processing, 0/30/60/90-day onboarding, and offboarding in concert with the Physiology HR team. Processes initial J-1 visa applications, J-1 extensions, and H-1B applications
- 20% Training and Development: Serves as a human resources conduit for all faculty, staff, and students. Assists in identifying and implementing departmental training and faculty, staff, and student development activities including compiling and distributing training materials.
- 20% Process Development – Assists with identifying needs, creating tools and systems to aid the HR processes, and creating comprehensive onboarding and offboarding programs for the department using automation tools.
- 10% Compliance – Schedules and tracks research safety and compliance training. Monitors, tracks, and records evaluation completion to produce regular reports, reminders, and compliance requirements. Maintains HR records according to University retention policy. Prepares and assists with regular reports. Assists with internal audits, FOIA requests, and information gathering. Performs HR transactions in compliance with union contracts, employment, and labor laws.
- 10% Other Activities: Assists faculty, staff, and students with payroll, basic reimbursement, and travel questions. Assists with the Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure process. Assists other programs with non-Physiology graduate students in Physiology labs with knowledge of NIH fellowship structures. Performs other activities as assigned
The position requires in-person presence at the office in East Lansing, MI. The position is not remote friendly. The Department is unable to offer immigration and/or employment visas for this position. This is an off-date position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

The Physiology Department Mission:
- Identify factors and molecules that promote health and disease.

- Train future scientists in state-of-the-art physiology concepts & approaches.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year department degree program in Human Resources, Business Administration, or in an area related to the work being performed; six months to one year of related and progressively more expansive work experience in a human resources function; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with Microsoft Automation Tools; Experience in employment recruitment management; Experience with MSU policies and procedures and familiarity with Enterprise Business System (EBS), Kuali Financial System (KFS), and Applicant Tracking System PageUp. Ability to carry out job duties with minimal guidance and assess priorities to meet timelines. Strong organizational techniques, attention to detail, teamwork, solution-finding, and the experience to work on several projects simultaneously; excellent and effective communication and critical thinking experience must work well as part of a collaborative team.
Ability to carry out job responsibilities with minimal supervision, determining priorities to meet deadlines, making independent decisions as necessary to serve the functional objectives of the department. Must have excellent and effective communication skills and critical thinking skills to accomplish independent decision making, effective time management skills.
