Job Description
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Position Summary:
The Academic Success Coach plays a critical role in supporting student academic persistence, retention and success. This position focuses on assisting students with support for personalized academic success planning, skill development, and campus engagement. The coach provides holistic support to improve student course success rates, retention, and graduation outcomes, with a particular focus on low-income and underserved student populations who are traditional and adult learners.
This Academic Success Coach Recruitment is to fill 2 positions; 1 Portsmouth Campus & 1 Norfolk Campus
Functional Responsibilities:
• Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with students to develop individualized Academic Success Plans (ASPs).
• Facilitate 5-week and 10-week progress check-ins to monitor academic performance and accountability.
• Lead workshops and mini-sessions on syllabus navigation, time management, study skills, and academic goal setting.
• Provide SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) awareness sessions and assist students with SAP appeals, offering writing guidance and submission support.
• Collaborate closely with tutoring, advising, and faculty to deliver a wraparound support model for at-risk students.
• Track student progress in Navigate or CRM, escalate flags when necessary, and ensure timely interventions.
• Support students with referrals to holistic services (tutoring, counseling, financial aid) and follow-up to ensure completion of next steps.
• Facilitate regular Affirmation & Motivation Circles (virtual or in-person) to promote a sense of belonging and peer support.
• Provide insights to staff and leadership about common student challenges and recommend strategies for continuous improvement.
• Participate in retention team meetings, success campaigns, and onboarding initiatives (e.g., Navigate training, FAFSA workshops).
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Experience working with at-risk, probationary, or underserved college students.
• Strong understanding of academic advising, student development theory, and retention best practices.
• Proficiency in academic coaching tools and CRM platforms (e.g., EAB Navigate).
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse student populations.
• Workshop facilitation and small group mentoring experience.
Additional Considerations
• Familiarity with SAP policies and appeal processes.
• Data-driven mindset with the ability to track and report on student outcomes.
