Job Description
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) changes lives, empowers students to succeed, and enhances the social and economic vitality of the region through high-quality education and workforce training, excellent service, and innovative partnerships.
Serve as the initial point of contact for the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS). Maintain a welcoming, accessible, and professional office environment to include greeting students and guests, assisting with questions, serving as a resource, making referrals, maintaining student database, running reports, accessing information in SAM, SIS, Canvas, Navigate, and other database systems. Monitor and maintain department email and voicemail system to ensure timely responses and routing, schedule appointments, maintain calendars, distribute and send emails, assist students with reasonable accommodations performing duties as a reader, scribe, notetaker, and other related academic support student needs. Maintain records and databases on student and programming activities, materials, equipment, and supplies, etc. Assist with department-wide projects and initiatives to support the mission of OAS.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | - High School Diploma or GED- Experience working in higher education or accessibility services.
Knowledge
- General knowledge of applicable college policies and procedures required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in standard office equipment to include computers, standard word processing and software related required.
- Applicable policies, applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- General knowledge of student services procedures.
- Awareness of disability related academic support services, including readers, scribes, and notetakers.
- Familiarity with student information systems and their role in supporting student success.
- Familiarity with accessibility services and academic accommodations.
Skills
- Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal relationships.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Will demonstrate excellent active listening skills.
- Proven experience working with diverse populations.
- Proficient in managing office operations, including scheduling, email, voicemail systems, and calendar maintenance.
Ability to:
- Identify and solve standard problems and refer more complex problems to appropriate staff. – Respond to routine inquiries and explain standard policies and procedures to others.
- Work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Exercise initiative and good judgment while working as a team member.
- Maintain schedules, timelines, and accurate recordkeeping.
- Attend department staff meetings as required.
- Collaborate on department–wide initiatives and contribute to the mission of the office.
- Perform duties such as reading, scribe and notetaking for students and accommodation (but not limited to).
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
Additional Considerations
- Knowledge of working in a fast-paced environment.
- Previous experience working in higher education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of policies and procedures.
- Be available (Monday-Friday) to work flexible daytime and/or evening hours and occasional weekends at any VPCC campuses and all extension centers or events.
