Description of Work 
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Business and Fiscal Affairs, the Engineering Research Portfolio Manager will direct research efforts for the CoE, oversee current and developing research centers, including pre and post-award activity and proposal development. Will coordinate with the CoE Associate Dean for Research (ADR) in representing the CoE in research-related meetings, both internal and external to the College or UNL. Responsible for identifying and cataloging faculty research areas of emphasis and interests, utilizing the results to uncover complementary strengths. Coordinate efforts with junior faculty in identifying potential funding sources to support their research strengths and provide training on proposal submission. Serve as liaison between CoE faculty and the Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Responsibility, Proposal Development and NUtech Ventures. Responsible for providing financial cost share information to the ADR for the CoE. Responsible for the financial approval of all proposals submitted on behalf of the CoE. Will have oversight of the F&A distribution for the college, as well as for state funds assigned to research support. Responsible for NRI, Tobacco Settlement Funds, VCR, Energy Center, IANR, UNL/UNMC and other internal grants, to include proposal submissions, expenditures and reporting. Work closely with the ADR and college communications team on research communications for the CoE. Partner with chairs and center/school directors to strengthen research efforts at the unit level. Direct efforts in the design and establishment of internal controls. Develop and implement annual college research strategic plan and long-term strategic plans for College research unit. This position will be housed outside of the business center.

Minimum Required Qualifications  | Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, economics or closely related field. Five years of grants/research management experience in a large research-intensive educational institution, including administrative responsibilities and experience in a higher education functional office or business center. Grant management experience. Intense multi-tasking is essential. Must have excellent communication skills both written and verbal, ability to work under pressure situations and deadlines, and the ability to work with challenging individuals in sensitive situations. Must have excellent management skills and the ability to build a cohesive team environment. Possess managerial and supervisory skills. Must have working knowledge of the following: organizational budgeting and accounting practices; techniques and procedures of financial research and analysis; and principles and processes involved in organizational planning and coordination. Demonstrated abilities to make mathematical computations, to conduct data queries and to apply budget instructions and regulations. Good technical, analytical, organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills and the ability to work independently. The ability to effectively display and exchange factual information and conclusions, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and to persuade individuals toward a particular course of action. Maintain a high level of professionalism in sensitive and stressful situations. Possess the ability to make high level decisions with minimum oversight while determining their potential impact to the college and university.

Preferred Qualifications  | Master’s degree and five years of grants/research management experience in a large research-intensive educational institution, including administrative responsibilities and experience in a higher education functional office or business center. Proficient with Enterprise Data Warehouse (formerly NuLook), SAP, NuRamp, SIS plus, PSL, Sapphire and Firefly. Prefer public accounting knowledge.
