The Learning & Development Specialist plays a crucial role in the dynamic L&D ‘engine room’ of Viasat’s Talent, Performance and Development Team developing and delivering innovative L&D initiatives and solutions tailored to the enterprise-wide needs of the global Viasat business.
Working as part of a team of Learning and Development Specialists, this role will afford you the opportunity to multi-skill across a broad array of L&D specialisms over time whilst the team builds, establishes, maintains and continuously improves Viasat’s enterprise-wide L&D offering.
You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive learning solutions and strategies that foster professional growth and drive organizational performance, helping employees build skills, enhance their performance and grow in their careers at Viasat.
You will be involved with developing tailored L&D solutions that align with Viasat’s Values and Capability Framework, ensuring that all employees are equipped with the skills necessary to perform effectively in their roles, thereby helping ensure Viasat’s continued success and competitive advantage.
The day-to-day:
- Conducting L&D needs assessments and designing L&D solutions in response to these.
- Using various instructional methods to deliver 70-20-10 L&D (incl. classroom instruction, e-learning, blended learning, mentoring, coaching, psychometrics, on-the-job training, etc.) and developing L&D tools and resources that employees can use to support their ongoing development.
- Creating and maintaining learning materials including eLearning courses, articles, job aids, manuals and videos, ensuring they are kept up-to-date and relevant to the needs of Viasat.
- Applying instructional design theories and methods to create impactful learning materials.
- Effective organisation and scheduling of learning solutions and programs in a timely manner to meet the needs of the business and learners.
- Applying adult learning principles and industry best practices to ensure employees get the best out of their learning and development at Viasat.
- Leaning in to support the Leadership Development Specialist with design, organisation and delivery of Leadership Development programming.
- Leaning in to help the Talent Management Portfolio Manager address individual and collective learning needs of critical talents, high potentials, successors, talent pools etc.
- Leaning in to help create or source L&D solutions that relate to and support the Viasat Capability Framework.
- Facilitating both face-to-face and virtual workshops and providing coaching and support to learners.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of L&D solutions using the Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model - via surveys, interviews and data analysis - to ensure solutions are objectively evaluated, meeting Viasat’s needs, and continuously improved.
- L&D administration within the Workday LMS, ensuring accurate reporting, smooth content delivery, and a user-friendly learning experience.
- Early Careers L&D and programming support.
- Keeping up with industry trends and identifying new approaches to L&D to ensure that Viasat provides its employees with the best possible L&D offering.
- Promoting a culture of continuous learning by making L&D solutions and opportunities practical, accessible, engaging, scalable, relevant and career aligned.
- Collaborating highly effectively across the L&D Team, the wider Talent, Performance and Development Team, with Talent Partners, Business Partners, I.T, Internal Comms and business leaders.
- Building and maintaining strong and effective relationships with business stakeholders, partners and learners.
- Managing L&D projects from start to finish, including establishing goals, learning objectives, timelines, coordinating project meetings, tracking progress, and identifying / addressing risks.
What you'll need:
- 3+ years experience in Corporate L&D
- Ability to design effective L&D solutions and measure outcomes.
- L&D Program Design: creating and delivering learning initiatives tailored to employee needs and organizational objectives.
- Instructional Design: Applying adult learning principles to build engaging, outcome-focused content across in-person, virtual, e-learning, and blended formats.
- Needs Assessment: Conducting surveys, interviews, performance reviews, and skills gap analyses to align development efforts with business priorities.
- Facilitation: Leading workshops, webinars, and training sessions in a clear, engaging, and impactful way.
- Evaluation: Applying models like Kirkpatrick’s to assess effectiveness, measure learning outcomes, and improve future initiatives.
- Project Management: Managing timelines, resources, and stakeholders to take programs from concept to implementation smoothly.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and adaptability. Conveying ideas clearly and in an engaging way to both learners and stakeholders

Salary range: $102,500.00 - $150,500.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $119,000.00- $179,000.00/ annually : At Viasat, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
