Job Description 
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a New Student Advisor in the college’s Advising Center. The position provides advising services to new and prospective students through individual sessions based on the philosophy of progressive (developmental) advising. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities for this role. Assists potential students from the point of inquiry through successful matriculation for their first semester. Assists with college application processes, college readiness discussions and determinations and program selection aligned with career and transfer goals. Works effectively as a part of the team advising structure of Virginia Western which includes New Student Advisors, Program Advisors, and Faculty Advisors. Maintains positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators at the college to respond effectively to student’s academic needs. Help students make connections with resources to support college success.

This position has an anticipated hire date of June 10, 2026.
Special Assignments  | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications  | Excellent interpersonal skills; knowledge of word processing and microcomputer applications; ability to work well with diverse types of people – supports the strategic goal of encouraging a respectful, nurturing, and caring environment of cultural diversity; excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly listening skills; ability to perform well with or without supervision; ability to assess needs and develop goal-oriented action plans; ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve goals and meet deadlines; knowledge of the purpose and mission of the community college; and knowledge of the academic advising process. Must be able to work evening and Saturday shifts as needed to provide office coverage.
Additional Considerations  | Experience dealing with the public and providing service to a diverse population is required. Experience that exhibits strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks under time pressure. Experience in a helping profession. Experience advising students and teaching and/or conducting workshops is desired. Knowledge of international student status requirements and other matters related to the enrollment process is desirable.
