Senior Database Reliability Engineer 2
Remote or Hybrid to Wayne, PA
Frontline Education is seeking a Senior Database Reliability Engineer 2 to support and maintain our database environments that power custom client-facing applications. As a vital member of the Data Management Operations Team, you’ll ensure the performance, integrity, and availability of databases hosted in AWS and on-premises (DB2 and MySQL). This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled engineer with a passion for scalable, secure, and high-performing data systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee key DBRE responsibilities for our DB2 environments
- AWS Database Management: Monitor, maintain, and optimize database systems hosted on AWS (RDS, EC2).
- On-Prem Database Support: Administer Linux-based DB2 and MySQL systems in on-premise environments.
- System Audits & Optimization: Conduct regular system audits and performance tuning for all DBMS platforms.
- Monitoring & Reporting: Track database health using relevant monitoring tools and provide performance reports.
- Automation & Scripting: Develop infrastructure automation using AWS CLI, Terraform, and Ansible.
- Backup & Recovery: Implement and support backup/recovery strategies using AWS Backup, S3, and Backup Vaults.
- Security & Compliance: Safeguard databases against unauthorized access and enforce database security best practices.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Development, Client Support, and internal teams to ensure seamless data operations.
- On-Call Support: Participate in the DBRE on-call rotation and respond to Jira-based support requests in a timely manner.
Critical Performance Objectives
First 90 Days
- Gain deep familiarity with Frontline’s AWS-hosted and on-premise database environments.
- Validate and enhance backup/restore plans to meet Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) targets.
- Strengthen database availability, reliability, and security.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with the team to build knowledge of AWS database systems and internal practices.
After 90 Days
- Take full ownership of operational support for Frontline’s AWS-based database infrastructure.
- Proactively identify and implement improvements and automation opportunities.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts and performance tuning (e.g., wait stats analysis, query plans).
- Continue participation in on-call and production support rotations.
Qualifications
Required
- Experience managing AWS cloud database technologies (RDS, EC2).
- Strong SQL and query optimization skills.
- Solid experience with Linux operating systems.
- Expertise in DB2 and at least of the following: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Proven ability to manage high-transaction OLTP databases.
Preferred
- Experience with additional technologies: MS SQL Server, Windows OS, AWS CLI, OLAP, DSS, Data Archiving.
- Familiarity with shell scripting, Agile methodologies, and cloud automation tooling.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, particularly within AWS environments.

The salary range for this role is $120,000 - $160,000 per year, based on experience, skills, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, this role includes a bonus, personalized PTO, and comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, 401k, and much more!
