Job Description  | Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years.  It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.  TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.  The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

This position will support Institutional Advancement at TCC by growing an engaged online community via official TCC social media, providing relevant content and spurring meaningful dialogue. To champion the paradigm of new and social media as a highly cost-effective and culturally relevant way to build engaged communities at TCC. To raise TCC’s visibility and amplify TCC culture, news and stories in relevant and timely conversations. To maximize TCC’s ability to support existing students and to attract/recruit prospective students.

Functional Responsibilities Ensure timely and accurate responses to questions posed directly and indirectly on social media. Create engaging and conversational responses to comments using the appropriate college “voice.” Monitor social media for mentions of TCC and respond appropriately. Share relevant posts, comments, and conversations with TCC entities (e.g., Deans, Security, Vice Presidents). Create and post compelling content that highlights TCC culture, news, and stories; addresses issues relevant to TCC audiences; and informs students about important events and deadlines. Develop weekly content plans in collaboration with Campus Communications Officers, Marketing, and other TCC entities. Coordinate social media for college events and independently plan and execute related projects to maximize TCC’s reach. Measure and report the impact of social media activities using analytics. Contribute to the development of the college-wide strategic marketing plan. Work with the marketing director to execute posts that support strategic marketing initiatives impacting enrollment. Engage with external entities, including businesses, media, and public officials, to maximize TCC’s reach. Analyze marketing data and propose strategic recommendations based on observed trends. Experiment with new and alternative ways to leverage social media. Ensure consistency of social media messaging across the institution. Collaborate with TCC entities (e.g., campuses, departments, and programs) to standardize and improve their social media practices. Promote social media as a communication channel. Coordinate and maintain TCC’s Social Media Policy and Social Media Best Practices/Guidelines. Post articles and photos in the content management system as needed. Implement crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate negative publicity or social media crises. Encourage and curate user-generated content to foster community engagement and authenticity. Ensure all social media activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and college policies including accessibility. Regularly analyze social media trends and incorporate them into the social media strategy to stay current and relevant.

KSA's/Required Qualifications  | Ability to write compelling, concise copy that summarizes and promotes TCC’s culture, programs, people and events. Ability to search TCC’s resources, TCC website, and the web to discover and amplify TCC news and stories. Ability to research TCC stories independently and in collaboration with Campus Communicators. High level skill with social media platforms, ability to post attractive, sharable content in accordance with best practices. Ability to communicate through multiple social media channels on a daily, often hourly, basis. Ability to represent TCC with professionalism and respect to all participants. Skill in spearheading marketing campaigns designed to increase web referrals, engagement and audience growth. Ability to recruit, coach and empower TCC departments, organizations, students and staff to further amplify TCC’s stories and culture through social media. Ability to monitor trends in social media tools, applications and best practices and to apply analytics to measure traffic and engagement. Knowledge of the English Language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar. Demonstrated experience using social media to engage with and grow online communities.
