Job Description

Wytheville Community College (WCC) is accepting applications for a full-time Education Support Specialist III, Talent Search Middle School Outreach Coordinator, for the WCC TRiO Talent Search Grant Project.
 The objectives of the Talent Search Project: To identify qualified middle and high school youths, who are low-income with the potential for education at the postsecondary level, encourage them to complete their secondary school and undertake a program of postsecondary education; and Assist the participants with the process of identifying their career interest, and applying to postsecondary institutions and for financial assistance. 
The purpose of the position:The Middle School Outreach Coordinator (MSOC) will assist middle school students with advising services that help them successfully identify areas of career interest and pursue post-secondary educational opportunities.The Middle School Outreach Coordinator will: (a) hold multiple group meetings at the schools; (b) develop an Individualized Service Plan for each participant; © develop and provide workshops for the participants and their parents; (d) maintain participant files on services provided; (e) assist participants with career assessment and research; (f) provide supervision for all field trips and program activities; and (h) other duties as assigned by the Project Director. 
Participant responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Participates in the identification and recruitment of students for Talent Search services Implements project-approved career interest and non-cognitive assessment Holds a minimum of 8 group meetings with individual meetings during the school year to assist students with the planning of their educational goals Connects students to approved tutoring services to enable them to complete their coursework successfully Provides 8th grade students with the college admissions test information –PSAT
Program responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Assistance with the calendar of excursions to Open House activities of colleges and universities during the academic year Assistance with the development and implementation of the middle school mentoring component of the Scholar’s Saturday AcademyAssistance in the identification of middle school students for the participation in youth leadership development programs Assistance with preparing two project newsletters August and March to distribute to students, parents, school personnel, community partners, and the WCC community Assistance with the development and implementation of project excursions to colleges and universities, cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to middle school disadvantaged youth 
WCC responsibilities will include but are not limited to:In-service and online training that is required of WCC personnel to ensure an effective and professional educational community Appointment on WCC committees, on-campus activities, and all activities geared towards pre-college students Appropriate training and professional development activities for the benefit of providing high-quality services to our participants and their parents, the WCC community, and community-at-large Assistance with Wytheville Community College activities for the benefit of our community members
Special Assignments  | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications  | Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education or an appropriate field related to Project objectives;Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;Ability to work with low-income potential first-generation college students; and
Professional/personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to the ones confronting project participants.
Additional Considerations  | Professional experience in pre-college TRiO Programs or similar programs;Knowledge and/or advocacy experience with disadvantaged communities;
Professional knowledge of college admissions and financial aid process;
Ability to maintain appropriate and professional boundaries with students and their parents, and within all professional settings; andAble to work independently with key target school contacts and community.
