Technical Director Full Description

Position Summary
Albright College seeks a dynamic and experienced Technical Director to lead the college’s core IT infrastructure and technical operations. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Technical Director will oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the College’s IT systems, networks, and server environments. This role will work closely with other IT teams—including Help Desk, Applications, and Academic Technology—to ensure the delivery of reliable, secure, and efficient technical services across the institution.
 
Essential Job Functions

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for the College’s technical infrastructure, including networks, servers, storage systems, and cloud environments.
• Manage a team of system and network administrators to support day-to-day operations and long-term planning.
• Partner with the CIO to assess, recommend, and implement emerging technologies that align with the College’s goals and budget.
• Work collaboratively with the Help Desk to resolve high-level support issues and ensure seamless escalation procedures.
• Ensure appropriate security protocols, disaster recovery strategies, and data backup systems are in place and regularly tested.
• Oversee technical support for campus-wide systems such as email, file storage, identity management, and authentication services.
• Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers to support infrastructure needs.
• Create and maintain documentation for infrastructure systems, processes, and policies.
• Monitor system performance, implement upgrades, and ensure high availability and minimal downtime.
• Collaborate with other IT units and academic departments to support instructional and administrative technology initiatives.
• Contribute to budget planning and resource allocation for technical services and infrastructure.

Qualifications
 Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 7+ years of progressively responsible IT experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of server and network architecture, virtualization, and cloud technologies.
• Demonstrated experience with cybersecurity best practices, system monitoring, and troubleshooting.
• Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a higher education environment.

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in a technology or management field.
• Experience in higher education or a similarly complex organization.
• Familiarity with platforms such as Microsoft 365, Active Directory, VMware, and network monitoring tools.
 
Working Conditions

• This position is based on-site at Albright College in Reading, PA.
• Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to address outages, upgrades, or emergency situations.
• Some lifting of equipment and physical presence in data center environments may be necessary.
