Full job description
Overview:
Trainers are an important part of Once’s mission to deliver early-reading instruction that will accelerate students toward lives full of the opportunity, connection, meaning, and joy that come from being a successful reader. Trainers with Once will travel to school districts to teach schools’ employees and/or high school CTE students how to deliver Once instruction to their students. Once is an early-reading tutoring program that prepares individuals identified by schools to lead short, daily, one-on-one tutoring sessions with students, mostly kindergarteners. (Learn more about Once at tryonce.com.) Trainers will travel to districts across the United States to lead large-group onboarding sessions with dozens of new instructors at a time and to lead small-group sessions in which they will model high-quality instruction, role-play and practice with the instructors, and give them feedback so that they deliver excellent instruction to their students. Trainers will make $40 per hour and Once will cover the cost of travel, lodging, and a per diem for food.
Details:
This is a contractor position that will begin as early as June 29, 2026, and may require the Trainer to spend weekdays on the road into November.
Before Trainers lead onboarding sessions independently, they will successfully complete synchronous and asynchronous training as well as shadow someone else leading sessions, studying how to do it. Then they will be ready to lead onboarding sessions with someone else shadowing them and giving them feedback. The Trainer will be ready to fly solo once all of the necessary onboarding steps have been successfully completed. We will pay them $40 per hour for their work during the synchronous and asynchronous onboarding.
Onboarding for new instructors happens in two stages. Part 1 is a large-group introduction to Once. Ideally, this is when all of the Once instructors across a district (often dozens of them) come together in a cafeteria or large professional-development space for 3-4 hours. Part 2 is when we go to each individual school to practice with small groups of instructors. Usually, this means working with about 6-12 instructors in a classroom for 6-8 hours. That session is very heavy on practicing, role-playing, and giving feedback to get instructors ready to work with students. Workdays for Trainers, therefore, usually mean working regular school hours.
By preparing instructors, our Trainers take responsibility for the reading progress of hundreds of students from across the country, ensuring that they master reading skills by the end of our one-year program.
Anticipated Start:
June 29, 2026
Responsibilities:
- Build instructors’ skill, ability, and confidence to teach the Once reading curriculum.
- Work with a diverse population of instructors, and use creativity and resilience to invest them in teaching the program and to engage them in training sessions.
- Study the Once curriculum and practice instruction so that you can model at a high level and ensure that instructors will teach effectively.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy while encouraging instructors' improvement by correcting errors directly, consistently, and with care.
- Facilitate live practice (with instructors) of specific aspects of instruction, and ensure that all of your feedback gets implemented precisely.
- Shadow existing Trainers, study asynchronously, and engage in feedback meetings about the way that you lead onboarding sessions.
Qualifications:
- You are able to commit to traveling for work on weekdays from late July into November.
- You are able to commit to working full days during those months.
- You have a firm belief in and commitment to Once’s mission.
- You maintain high expectations for every instructor. Each instructor will be different, so you will differentiate your approaches accordingly, but you will maintain ambitious goals for them all.
- You pay meticulous attention to detail when preparing for onboarding sessions, when facilitating sessions, and when receiving feedback from Once's leadership.
- You are willing to take personal responsibility for your instructors’ success and for your own.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Clarity is key!
- You are eager for feedback and are committed to your own continual improvement as a Trainer.
- You speak and act lovingly to every instructor regardless of how any instructor may speak and act toward you.
- You demonstrate the ability to use Google Workspace.
