Assistant Director of Intramurals and Recreation Full Description

As the assistant director of intramurals and recreation, you will report to the director of university recreation and oversee a diverse program that encourages student engagement and wellbeing through organized, inclusive, and innovative recreational activities. You will plan quarterly and bi-weekly intramural leagues, tournaments, and special events. Since not all programs are held in university-owned facilities, you will identify, secure, and build positive relationships with off-campus venues and community partners. You will also coordinate facility usage to ensure all equipment is maintained, cleaned, and organized; handle setup and takedown of spaces; and work with external facility managers to ensure smooth program operations off-site. Additionally, you will make sure that all programs are delivered with a strong focus on safety, customer service, and community building.
In this role, you will hire, train, and supervise student employees, as well as lead official training programs for intramural sports and recreational events. Responsibilities include the maintenance of payroll records, the oversight of employee schedules, and the upkeep of team information on IMLeagues.com. You will lead marketing and promotional efforts to increase visibility and participation, establish partnerships with local organizations to support outreach and off-campus opportunities, and monitor participation trends to evaluate and improve program effectiveness. Additionally, you will provide data-driven recommendations to enhance and expand programs in line with student interests and national recreation trends. Among other duties, you will assist with the creation, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures for intramural and recreational programs and serve as the primary contact for participant incidents and conflicts.
The ideal candidate has strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. They show excellent time management, interpersonal, and conflict resolution abilities, which enable effective collaboration with a diverse group of staff and clients. They are also capable of lifting and moving recreational equipment and working in an active environment. Additionally, they can collaborate, adapt, and demonstrate outstanding facility and risk management skills.
The candidate is available to work Tuesday–Thursday, noon to 9 p.m., and Friday–Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. They must be able to keep a flexible schedule based on facility use and program participation.
Minimum qualifications:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, recreation, sports management, kinesiology, or a related discipline
  • At least two years of professional experience in collegiate recreation, intramurals, or campus programming, and supervising or mentoring student staff
  • Proficient in Microsoft software and Google apps with the knowledge or ability to learn other programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) standards, best practices, and trends in collegiate recreation
Preferred qualifications: 
  • Demonstrated experience in managing an intramurals program, training sports officials, and supervising student staff
  • Knowledge of sports programming
Certificates, licenses, and registrations: 
  • Valid driver’s license and access to dependable transportation
  • Current certification in First-Aid Training/CPR/AED
Travel required: 
  • 10–20%
Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
