Description INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN SPECIALIST SENIOR
University of Alabama at Birmingham The School of Health Professions (SHP) is seeking an Instructional Design Specialist to support online, blended, and technology enhanced instruction delivered through the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). This position serves as a key member of the Instructional Design Support (IDS) team, which administers the SHP Canvas sub account and partners with faculty to ensure course quality, accessibility, and instructional effectiveness. This role is critical to supporting faculty course development, semester to semester course maintenance, and Title II digital accessibility compliance across SHP academic programs. The Instructional Design Specialist works closely with faculty, IDS colleagues, and the Learning Resource Center (LRC) to sustain high quality learning environments that align with UAB and SHP mission, vision, and values.
Key Roles & Responsibilities· Serve as a Canvas LMS specialist supporting faculty teaching online and blended courses within SHP.· Assist faculty with the design, development, and modification of course content, assignments, assessments, and learning activities using evidence based instructional design practices.· Provide one on one faculty consultations, group training, and workshops related to Canvas functionality, instructional design strategies, and educational technology.· Support semester course preparation activities, including course copy, content maintenance, and term transitions within the SHP Canvas sub account.· Assist faculty with Title II digital accessibility compliance, including review and remediation of course materials, documents, instructional media, andCanvas course structure.· Promote the use of accessible templates, universal design principles, and best practices for inclusive learning environments.· Collaborate with LRC media services to ensure instructional media is properly formatted, captioned, and accessible for instructional use.· Track instructional technology trends and recommend emerging tools that enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.· Assist in the development and maintenance of instructional resources, guides, and documentation for faculty.· Perform other duties as assigned in support of SHP instructional missions.
Salary Range: $55,180 - $89,670
Qualifications Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Preferred Qualifications: Experience supporting Canvas LMS in higher education. Demonstrated experience with online or blended course design. Familiarity with digital accessibility standards, ADA/Title II requirements, or universal design for learning (UDL). Experience working directly with faculty in academic environments. Strong organizational, communication, and consultation skills.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Work Characteristics · Researches and evaluates department educational and training requirements.· May provide technical and/or editorial review for development and implementation of interactive websites.· Conducts focus groups, reviews facilities, monitors professional publications, interviews subject matter experts and recommends instructional strategies.· Designs materials, prepares and writes scripts for videotapes, slide presentations, self-instruction and on-line instructional materials.· Designs and writes promotional materials.· Assists medical faculty in preparing lectures and presentations.· May coordinate assignments contracted to outside consultants.· May write and edit articles for professional publications.· May have some supervisory responsibility.
